Adding Details in Writing for Elementary School Students

One of the most common comments parents mentioned in school report card concerning their elementary school kid’s writing is LACK OF DETAILS. There is one simple solution that every elementary school student can learn to give more details to make their writing more interesting. This one particular solution is adding modifier(s) to the main components of a sentence. For example, Jack finished his homework. From this simple sentence, we know one fact about Jack, that’s it, nothing more. But if we add some modifiers, the same sentence would read quite interesting. First, we can add an adjective or two to describe Jack, Nine-year-old, hard-working Jack, then we know a bit more about Jack, who is probably going to Grade 3 or 4, and he works hard; second, we can add one or two adverbs to describe finished, Nine-year-old, hard-working Jack carefully finished his homework, and we know Jack didn’t just finish his homework, but carefully finished, which is consistent with “hard-working”; third, we can add an adjective to describe homework. Nine-year-old, hard-working Jack carefully finished all his homework, then we know, he didn’t just finish one piece of his homework or part of his homework, instead he finished all of his homework. We can also show how he finished his homework by adding his feelings, Nine-year-old, hard-working Jack carefully finished all his homework without complaining before dinner, in addition, we know when he finished his homework. By just adding some modifiers, the simple boring sentence “Jack finished his homework” becomes a much more interesting sentence giving a lot of details about Jack: his age, type of student, how he did his homework and when he did. The new sentence reads like this: Nine-year-old, hard-working Jack carefully finished all his homework without complaining before dinner. This is just one example of one simple solution to add details in writing. Want to learn more about how to add details in your writing to make your stories more attractive?
